9TH UNDERGRADUATE E-COLLOQUIUM ON HEALTH SCIENCES

9th Undergraduate Colloquium on Health Sciences 2020
Date: 26th June 2020
Time: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

‘Embrace science, resist ignorance’ is our 9th Undergraduate Colloquium on Health Sciences (UCHS) tagline. Most of us are aware that Covid-19 has affected all of us in many ways. In an effort to break the Covid-19 infection chain that has killed more than half a million people worldwide, we adhered to the strict guidelines given by the Ministry of Health Malaysia and stayed at home during the movement control order (MCO). Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Thus, now is the time to understand more, so that we can fear less.
Due to this unprecedented situation, the 9th UCHS was held virtually as an E-Colloquium for the first time via Google Meet. It was organised by the students of Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Sciences (Hons) and Bachelor of Occupational Safety and Health (Hons). The objectives of this event are to enhance communication skills and knowledge in current scientific research among undergraduate students, expose students in managing scientific research seminar and cultivate a sense of teamwork among them, and facilitate the exchange of ideas and fundamental concepts among students and lecturers. Everyone including the public was invited to join and learn more on health sciences in this meaningful event. Our oral presenters, Ivy Emily binti John Jinal from Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Science (Hons) presented her final year project with the title ‘Thalassaemia: Effect Time and Storage on MCV and MCH Parameters Stability’ and Kamilia binti Kamarul Bahrin from Bachelor of Occupational Safety and Health (Hons) presented her final year project with the title ‘Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Biomedical Waste among Health Workers in Private Hospital’. In addition, 28 research posters were presented and examined. There were 15 staff from Faculty on Health Sciences and 8 students joined the opening ceremony event in UNISEL Shah Alam campus, 72 participants present in the Google Meet, 192 views in the Facebook live, and 6.18k views in the blogspot. This event was very successful despite the logistic and connectivity issues that were resolved very efficiently and quickly.

Credits must be given to the combined efforts of the committee members and our advisor, Dr Yusmi Mohd Yunus for their commitment, sacrifices and endless hard work. It was not easy organizing this inaugural event during the new norm but we made it happened. Thank you all for a job well done and keen participations. We are looking forward for other similar virtual events which will connect us all in this pandemic period and reducing barriers in learning.
